Why are we needed?

A powered wheelchair can cost between £3,000 and £12,000 depending on the severity of the disability and the adaptations needed. This is totally out of reach for most disabled people. Even large national charities rarely meet the full cost. Because of this many people are forced into purchasing second hand equipment which could mean their prescription is compromised. Invariably with a limited life, it will not be covered by a manufacturer’s guarantee and they are then back to square one, still desperately needing a reliable new powered wheelchair or scooter. Because of the special and very generous discounts awarded to us by carefully selected suppliers, we are able to provide the best possible value on brand new equipment, at a cost that is competitive with most second hand prices.

We review and fund each applicant individually, after they have had an assessment by a specialist healthcare professional, usually a physiotherapist or occupational therapist. An important factor of this assessment is for the beneficiary to have a trial in a powered wheelchair or scooter around their home environment. This will ensure that they are able to handle it with competence and therefore make full use of the equipment they receive.

We aim to reach and help disabled people who, quite simply, have nowhere else to turn - those whose disability falls outside the remit of major disability charities, or their mobility has been curtailed by conditions common to elderly people, like a stroke or severe arthritis.
